How Often Do People Move? And Where Do You Fit In?
At Beercocks, we’ve helped people across Hull and East Yorkshire through every type of move—from first-time buyers to families upgrading their space, and those finally discovering their forever home. But how often do most people actually move?
A recent survey by Compare My Move asked 2,000 people across the UK about their moving history. Here’s what they found:
- 29% had moved two or three times
- 32% had moved four to six times
- 15% had moved seven to nine times
- 7% had moved ten to twelve times
- 7% had moved more than twelve times
On average, Brits move six times in their lifetime. The top reasons? Upsizing, downsizing, and lifestyle changes. Only 3% moved due to work—proving that for most, a move is about life, not logistics.
Is Moving Becoming Less Common?
Contrary to popular belief, people are actually moving less than they used to. Research from Queen’s University Belfast shows that home moves have been steadily declining since the 1970s. In fact, around a million fewer people moved in the 2000s than in the 1970s.
This trend isn’t unique to the UK—it’s mirrored in countries like the US, Germany, and Australia. Why? A few reasons:
- Fewer affordable homes on the market
- Rising property prices
- More young adults staying at home for longer
- An ageing population that’s less likely to relocate
When You Do Move, Make It Count
Because people tend to move less frequently these days, each move matters more. Whether you’re looking to sell in Cottingham, buy in Beverley, or find the perfect family home in Willerby, choosing the right estate agent is crucial.
